Way of Soul

As a first-generation Chinese American, I’ve seen how cultural differences can spark curiosity, as well as prejudice. Cultural prejudice and misunderstanding are social issues that come from a lack of exposure to people who are different. When individuals grow up in an environment where everyone is similar, differences in language, traditions, or even physical appearance can feel strange. This unfamiliarity can turn into fear and grow into prejudice if not challenged. The obvious solution is education, and I plan to start a clothing brand that aims to educate others about the beauty of cultures around the world.

Ever since I was young, I’ve had a strong passion for business and fashion. After cultivating my business and design skills for many years, I am now developing my own online apparel and accessories brand that embodies this appreciation for diversity, embracing individuality, and celebrating cultures. The design of the apparel and accessories is inspired by cultures around the world, and in each product description, I intend to detail the story of the piece, including its history, meaning, and significance. I intentionally focus less on mainstream aspects and more on unique perspectives that challenge consumers to see cultures through fresh eyes. To ensure accuracy, I have collaborated with cultural consultants and local artists while also coordinating with overseas manufacturers. For example, I have reached out to Chinese artists to learn about their traditional art style and the significance of cultural symbols. I have worked closely with local entrepreneurs, acquiring inspiration for website design, marketing strategies, and brand-building, and recently released our first collection inspired by Chinese traditions such as tea ceremonies, architecture, performances, and cultural beliefs. I chose to start with Chinese designs first because I have seen the growth in popularity of East Asian cultures, and I wanted to be able to properly represent the ideas and significance without appropriation.

Ensuring that business practices are culturally respectful is especially important for the next phase of my designs. On social media, I have seen a lot of stereotypes, prejudice, and misrepresentation of other cultures. Therefore, in the future, I hope to release apparel designed by artists from those cultures that thwarts the negative stereotypes constantly seen. This overlaps with our second mission to uplift small artists by providing meaningful ways to express cultural identity.

With each design, I hope to share important life stories, growing a company that goes beyond just clothing: Way of Soul strives to become a brand that empowers people who design it and wear it. I plan to transform a personal passion for cultural appreciation into a global movement against misunderstanding and prejudice.
